Clean and rinse the barley, brown rice, sweet rice, and black beans thoroughly under cold running water. Soak them separately in water for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Drain the soaked barley, brown rice, sweet rice, and black beans completely. Spread them out on clean towels or baking sheets to air-dry fully. This may take several hours.

Heat a large, dry pan or wok over medium heat. Add the dried barley and roast, stirring constantly, until it turns a light golden brown and smells fragrant, about 10-15 minutes. Remove and set aside.
