1Gently wipe the dried magnolia leaves clean with a damp cloth. If the dried magnolia leaves are very stiff, briefly soak them in warm water for 5 minutes to make them pliable, then pat dry.
2Rinse the Japanese short-grain rice thoroughly until the water runs clear. Cook the Japanese short-grain rice according to package instructions or in a rice cooker.
3In a small bowl, combine the awase miso, mirin, sake, sugar, and dashi stock. Mix well until a smooth paste forms.
