1Rinse short-grain white rice, glutinous rice, proso millet, and hulled barley separately under cold running water until the water runs clear.
2Place the rinsed short-grain white rice, glutinous rice, proso millet, and hulled barley in a large bowl, cover with 500g of cold water, and let them soak for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
3Rinse black beans. Place black beans in a small pot with 200g of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until slightly tender. Drain and set aside.
