1Wash toor dal thoroughly. Pressure cook the toor dal with 300g water and 1g turmeric powder until very soft, about 3-4 whistles. Mash lightly and set aside.
2Soak tamarind in 100g hot water for 15 minutes. Mash with your fingers and extract the thick pulp, discarding any fibrous solids.
3Finely chop the onion, green chili, and tomatoes. Mince the garlic.
